Professional Experience

Bob has since 2004 been conducting research on the tricolored blackbird, a near-endemic California songbird and species of special concern, and serves as the scientific lead for the Tricolored Blackbird Working Group. Bob is also the senior author of the Wildlife Crossings Guidance Manual, a technical document used by Caltrans, the California Department of Transportation, biologists to assess impacts of proposed highway projects on wildlife crossings. Bob is also Project Manager for a technical review of the Habitat Monitoring System (HMS) of the California State Parks Off-highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division. Bob also oversees a project which provides Internet access to documented, standardized, taxonomically harmonized species inventories of the world's protected areas. This project includes 1) the development of biological inventory software used by biologists conducting biological inventories of protected areas, and 2) Internet databases providing access to the the accumulated inventories. Bob has served as an instructor for several classes in the departments of Environmental Science and Policy (ESP) and Wildlife, Fisheries and Conservation Biology (WFCB) at U.C. Davis, and in the Department of Biological Sciences at California State University, Sacramento. Bob has been a consultant to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the U.S. National Park Service, and the U.S. Department of State, and was a member of the Peregrine Falcon Recovery Team for the state of Colorado.

Resources (Data Contact)

Dataset: Monitoring

  • A database of standardized, documented, taxonomically harmonized species inventories of plants and vertebrates of the world's protected areas. A web interface provides for queries and data download.
  • The Tricolor blackbird database and associated portal provides access to information about the tricolored blackbird (Agelaius tricolor), a near-endemic California passerine and the most colonial songbird in North America.
