Overview
The Golden Gate National Recreation Area (GGNRA) Nursery System seeks a part-time Propagule Collector for extensive seed collection, plant salvage, and related duties.  This position is based out of the Marin Headlands Nursery which is located in Fort Cronkhite, overlooking the Pacific Ocean at Rodeo Beach.  This position will do the majority of the propagule collection in preparation for extensive revegetation required after road construction in the Marin Headlands and Fort Baker. 

Approximately 75% of this position will be in the field.  This position requires extensive hiking on and off trails throughout open spaces in the greater Marin Headlands.  This work may include exposure to poison oak.  An ideal candidate would be familiar with native plants of Marin, including common native grasses, and would have previous experience in seed collection and seed processing.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
* Collect maximum allowable quantities of seeds (based on protocol) for specified native species throughout Marin Headlands watersheds.  This includes scouting for, accurately identifying plants, accurately timing seed ripeness, recording collections, and mapping collection sites using GPS unit. 
* Process, dry, clean, and store seeds that have been collected.
* Salvage high-value native plants from specific sites and road corridors.
* Track and organize collection progress and maintain ongoing & accurate collection records. 
* Complete administrative tasks and data entry requiring attention to detail. 
* Collaborate with nursery manager and staff in scheduling and prioritizing propagule collection and field work.
* Follow guidelines and protocols to ensure worker safety.
* Possibly supervise volunteers in the field during seed collection programs.
* Occasionally assist with relevant nursery-based work.

Minimum Qualifications
* At least one season demonstrated professional level experience in propagule collection.
* Knowledge of SF Bay Area plant communities and native plant species, especially common native grasses.
* Demonstrated ability to safely and efficiently hike and work in the field for extended periods of time.
* Professional level plant identification experience, or the equivalent ability to effectively use a taxonomic key in identifying plant species.
* Familiarity with GIS mapping and use of GPS instruments.
* Excellent written and oral communication skills.
* Ability to work independently with little supervision.  Motivated and self-directed.
* Proven ability to complete detail-oriented tasks, especially accurate record keeping and data entry.
* Ability to safely lift 30 lbs.
* Experience using MS Word, Access and Excel software programs.
* Valid California driver’s license and excellent driving record.  Must qualify for vehicle insurance to use company vehicles.

Desired Qualifications
* Bachelor Degree in Ecology, Botany or related field, equivalent professional experience, or demonstrated background knowledge and experience.
* Experience working with, training, motivating, and supervising volunteers.
* Experience cleaning and processing a variety of native seeds.
* Familiarity with Marin Headlands hiking trails and adjacent plant communities.

Terms/Salary:
Part-time temporary position, 16-30 hours per week.  Scheduling and hours are somewhat dependent upon propagule ripeness and field conditions.  The employment term is May through October, with the possibility of extension for a few additional months.  Commitment is required through October.  Preferred start date is mid-May.

Compensation is $15.00 per hour.  Only state disability and workers compensation insurance provided.  This position will likely be re-posted/renewed in the Spring of 2010.
