Moved to Vallejo, CA in 1939 where his father, Ward Cornett, worked at Mare Island Naval shipyard.

Graduated from Vallejo High School June 1944

Drafted in Army June 1944

• Entered 17 weeks of basic training, Camp Roberts, CA
  
• Attended Jump School at Fort Benning, GA

• Port of Embarcatation - New York
• Port of Debarcation - Glascow, Scotland
  
• (was 2-3 days out when President Roosevelt died)
  
• Boarded troop train to South Hampton, England to meet boat to La Havre, France.

• Arrived Essen, Germany Spring 1945 with the XVII (17th) Airborne, 507th as private
  
• During Ruhr Pocket opertion, the 507th held Alfried Krupp von Bohlen, Jr. prisoner in his Villa Hugel (aka Krupp's Castle) -- now a museum
• Transferred to 82nd Airborne with the 505th to Epinal, France, and then were first American troops into Berlin
  
• After VE Day, served as Corporal company clerk near Frankfurt/Am Main, Oberursel with 508th
