HAWAI‘I IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SEA:
As you probably know, The Hawaiian Islands have an amazing natural history.
These volcanic islands are the most isolated islands in the world, sitting in the center of the Pacific ocean, over 2,000 miles from the closest continental land mass.
Hawai‘i has the most active volcano in the world. The wettest place on Earth is there, as are the tallest sea cliffs. All the major ecological zones of Earth are represented there.
Over 70 million years of isolation, species arrived by wind and water and evolved into habitats ranging from alipine deserts to tropical rainforests and coastal dunes.
In less than 6,500 square miles of land, Hawai‘i is home to over 10,000 life forms found nowhere else on Earth.
And, in Hawai‘i, more species face possible extinction than anywhere else in the United States.
