First: Find Out What GIS and Platform is Available
What GIS program is available, and on what platforms, for your project?
I'm a US Government Employee
Most everyone (but not all) I'm working with on my project have chosen ESRI ARC/INFO and ARCView Products.
- Some use ARC/INFO and ARCView on a UNIX workstation
- Some only have PC ARC/INFO
- Others have UNIX ARC/INFO and PC ARCView
- Still others only have PC ARCView, and don't even know how to use it!
And
- Some are experienced computer users
- Some are field staff who would like to learn GIS
- Some are administrators who would like to learn GIS
- Some of them consider me the resident GIS "expert" ()
Most of the end users of the GIS data, including me, use ARCView in a PC environment.
So ...
- I took a class that went through the ARC/INFO tutorial
- Decided to do only what I absolutely have to do in UNIX ARC/INFO
- Then export everything out of UNIX ARC/INFO and back into PC ARCView ASAP!
