General Plan Data & Map Release

The Resources Agency in conjunction with the University of California Davis are proud to announce the release of the first ever seamless General Plan map of California. All county general plans and many city general plans were integrated into one statewide Geographic Information System (GIS) dataset. The data were standardized to thirteen consistent land use classifications for the intent of natural resource and infrastructure planning.

ICE to co-sponsor annual Salmonid Restoration conference

The 22nd Annual Salmonid Restoration Conference and 14th International Salmonid Habitat Enhancement Workshop will be held in Davis, California at the Veteran's Memorial Center from Wednesday, March 17th through Saturday, March 20th, 2004. The Salmonid Restoration Federation will host this conference entitled "Collaborative Watershed Efforts for Salmonid Recovery" in collaboration with the American Fisheries Society-Fisheries Management Section and Trout Unlimited.

ICE Co-Director Michael McCoy Elected President of California Planning Roundtable

Michael McCoy, co-director of the Information Center for the Environment in the Department of Environmental Science and Policy, was elected president of the California Planning Roundtable for 2004. The organization promotes creativity and excellence in planning by providing leadership in addressing important land use, transportation, and natural resources planning issues in California. The Roundtable has historically advised the Legislature, the governor, city and county planning officials and members of the profession on matters of planning policy and practice.

ICE completes 7-year Geospatial WaterBodySystem (GeoWBS)

After seven years, the ICE team that programmed GeoWBS is celebrating mission accomplished. GeoWBS is a spatially driven enterprise GIS developed for the State Water Resources Control Board to catalog and assess waterbodies pursuant to the Clean Water Act.

Dr. Virginia Dale to visit ICE

Dr. Dale is a leading landscape ecologist who has applied her skills to ecological modeling, forest dynamics, forest responses to global climate change, decision analysis, and most recently assessing effects of land-use change and providing a decision support framework for environmental decision-making. Dr. Carolyn Hunsaker to Visit ICE

Professor Jim Quinn quoted in the L.A. Times

A Los Angeles Times story on the U.S. Forest Service's study of the effects of increased grazing and logging in the Sierra Nevada's 11 national forests quotes Jim Quinn, professor in the Department of Environmental Science and Policy, who was part of a team of scientists and academics who reviewed the study at the Forest Service's request. Quinn said that scientists remain concerned that a number of species in the Sierra Nevada would "react badly" to the proposed increases. A similar story in the Sacramento Bee quoted Quinn extensively.

John McPhee to Visit UC Davis

John McPhee, one of the foremost writers of contemporary American nonfiction, will visit the University of California, Davis, November 10-14, 2003 in a series of four public appearances. McPhee comes under the auspices of the annual Snyder/Soderquist Distinguished Visiting Writers Series. Established in honor of Gary Snyder, UC Davis emeritus poet and Pulitzer Prize-winner, by former UC Regent and businessman Charles J. Soderquist, the program presents major contemporary writers on nature, science and the humanities.
