Christine Meynard receives her Ph.D.

   • 

ICE graduate student Christine Meynard received her Ph.D. in Ecology for her studies on species distributions and local richness patterns: from simulations with artificial species to conservation planning for birds of the Chilean forests.

She will give a final seminar in 2124 Wickson Hall on September 7, and will begin a prestigious postdoctoral appointment in her native Chile in October.

ICE poster wins first place at ESRI User Conference

   • 

A map entitled "Spatially Integrated Reporting of Environmental Critera for Resource Management: An Example from Lake Tahoe" Has placed first in the "Best Software Integration" category at the 2006 ESRI User Conference in San Diego.

The map described the process by which ICE assisted the USFS in reporting climatic data based on predefined mapping units. ICE demonstrated that an integrated reporting system could greatly simplify the process of preparing a lengthy summary of data.

Dr. Emma Underwood publishes a new book in the WWF eco-regions assessment series:

ICE provides technical assistance to the Great Valley Center in producing the Economic Indicators Report for 1999 to 2004

The Information Center for the Environment (ICE) at the University of California, Davis provided technical assistance to the Great Valley Center (GVC or www.GreatValley.org) in the recent publication of "The State of the Great Central Valley: Assessing the Region Via Indicators: The Economy." A group of ICE employees headed by Nathaniel Roth and including input from Michael McCoy, Dr. Joshua Viers, and Joshua Johnson provided mapping assistance to GVC staff members.

Bob Meese to represent ICE at Biodiversity Informatics Workshop in India

Dr. Robert Meese has been invited to participate in the Joint International Workshop on Biodiversity Informatics in Pune, India, December 7-9, 2004. Dr. Meese joins colleagues from the U.S. National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII; http://www.nbii.gov) and Indian scientists at a 3 day workshop hosted by the National Chemical Laboratory in Pune.

California Senate honors 10 years of ICE service.

Statewide General Plan maps now available for California

   • 

The California Resources Agency has compiled all city and county general plan maps and put them on the Web. The myriad local land use categories have been standardized into 13 land use types, which allows one to view patterns at the county, region, and state levels. Go to: http://legacy.ca.gov/new_atlas.epl to open the site. Then, click on Land Ownership and Use. Select General Plans. This layer is the plans as received and standarized. You have to zoom onto a part of the state, for the map to draw. You can zoom in and out and query features.

ICE to present Cosumnes Research at CALFED Science Symposium

ICE Programmers and Analysts will be presenting ongoing research at this year's Science Symposium. Also look for Sydney Vergis' poster on the Geography of the Delta; Sydney is a senior undergraduate in Environmental Policy and Planning and an intern at ICE.

ICE Co-director, Mike McCoy addresses National Transportation Research Board mid-year meeting

Mike McCoy will address the mid-year meeting of the National Transportation Research Board's Committee on Environmental Analysis in Transportation.

ICE efforts central to Gov. Schwarzenegger's California Performance Review

   • 

ICE created CEQAnet II, a web portal and map service, to facilitate the electronic capture of environmental documentation used as part of the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). These efforts were recognized by the California Performance Review, a comprehensive effort to examine business practices by the State of California as ordered by Governor Schwarzenegger, as being a critical and streamlining technology to improve resource conservation, in general, and the environmental review process conducted by state agencies, in particular.
